Americans believe in staying young and looking young.
According to a study from Harvard University, we spend over
$1.6 billion a year on anti-aging products, including skin creams,
micro-dermabrasion products and serums of various sorts. But
are there natural foods or herbs that can help you avoid wrinkles
or, better yet, help to smooth away wrinkles you already have?
The answer, fortunately,  is "yes.

1.
Fish with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Research studies have found
that omega-3 fatty acids help to give you smooth, youthful skin.
Part of the reason omega-3s are so good for your skin is that
they help to reduce inflammation not only in your skin but
throughout your body. Thus, you have less puffiness, redness
and breakouts.  You will also have fewer wrinkles because your
skin will be less dry.  Salmon, sardines and mackerel are great
sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

2.
Olive Oil. Olive oil is used by many women around the world as
a moisturizer. Eating olive oil can help to reduce inflammation
and wrinkles. Just add some to your salads as a dressing.

3.
Olives. The olives themselves are powerful anti-oxidants.
What's the big deal about anti-oxidants.  Think of an apple.
When you leave an apple on a table, the white turns brown.

That's the process of oxidation. It is what ages the apple. It is
also is what ages you and your skin.  By "aging" most people
mean the departure of youthful skin, athleticism and optimism. It
starts around age 25 to 30, accelerates in the 40's and has
"arrived" by the 50's.

Slow down oxidation and you will  slow down the aging process.

Olives are great sources of anti-oxidants.

4.
Blueberries. Blueberries are rich in anti-oxidants. Add a
handful to your breakfast cereal to slow down aging and
wrinkles from aging.

5.
Pomegranates. These have some of the highest
concentrations of anti-oxidants among fruits. Pomegrantes fight
wrinkles. It's a simple as that. But you have to be moderate.
Pomegranates are also rich in sugar, which as we will see below,
causes problems for our skin.

6.
Green Vegetables. Green vegetables have many powerful
anti-oxidants. They are also low in sugar. Why is sugar bad for
your skin?

Have you ever noticed that many older people have a kind of stiff
glaze on their skin, like a sugar-glazed donut?

Well, that frozen glaze look is caused by a process known as
"glycation".  Glycation occurs when sugar molecules bind to red
blood cells, and make them jagged, like porcupines.  They cause
a lot of damage to the fine capillaries in your face, and eventually
make your skin look hard, stiff and glazed over.

So, one of the best things you can do for your skin is to avoid
any excess sugar. Sugar ages your skin. Sugar makes you old.
Skip the donuts. Skip the cookies. Skip the white bread (which
turns into sugar in your body). Your face will thank you for it.
